Charlie Condou – Marcus in Coronation Street – is joining the line-up at the start of this year’s Brighton Equality Walk. The Walk, in aid of gay equality charity Stonewall and their anti-homophobic bullying work with schools, takes place from noon on Sunday May 2.

Condou will appear at the start of the Walk alongside Brighton’s Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett, Councillor Garry Peltzer Dunn the city’s Deputy Mayor. Official hosts Guinevere Turner – American L Word actress and screenwriter – and Rikki Beadle-Blair – Director of FIT, Stonewall’s anti-bullying film for schools – complete the line-up.

The Equality Walk, which is supported by American Express, last year raised over £50,000 to help Stonewall develop their touring anti-bullying play FIT into a DVD. Following a series of screenings around the country – including one in Brighton in March – the DVD and teaching materials were sent to every secondary school in Britain, to great acclaim. This year’s walk continues to support Stonewall’s work with schools, this time to develop resources to support primary school teachers. Stonewall’s developing a series of resources to help primary school teachers understand and celebrate different families – including posters for schools, a training DVD and information about stories that reflect modern lives.

Ruth Hunt, Stonewall’s Deputy Director of Public Affairs said ‘Teachers can struggle to acknowledge that different families exist – and this has an impact on children and young people. By working with Primary Schools we can reduce this impact and make school a safe and inclusive environment for all children.’

Registration for the Brighton Equality Walk costs just £10, and is free of charge to children aged 12 and under. And there’s a prize for the top fundraiser, two return business class tickets on the Eurostar, a two night stay in a 4 star hotel and £500 spending money – all donated by American Express Travel.
