Committee members of Derby Pride are very proud and honoured to present the Annual Jeffery Tillett Award.
In line with their Mission Statement and in memory of Jeffrey Tillett, the award will be presented to acknowledge achievement, work and dedication to the LGBT Community of Derbyshire.
The award will also be a celebration of Jeffery’s live and work for the LGBT Community, please find below an obituary written when Jeffrey sadly passed away in 2008 which details his life and work as provided by his life time partner Councillor Robin Woods.
Jeffery Tillett was Mayor of Derby in 1977, the Silver Jubilee year, when the Queen visited and made Derby a City. He was a Conservative member of the Council for 33 years and became its Leader in 1988, the week that Section 28 became law. His signature appeared on a national petition against the new law in The Independent, a story that was covered in the Derby Evening Telegraph at the time.
Rather than supporting Section 28, he risked legal action by seeing to it that Derby City Council funded the first Gay Film Festival at Derby’s Metro cinema. A festival that has visited Derby every year since.
As Mayor, he founded the Derby CAMRA Beer Festival and City of Derby Community Arts Trust (now QUAD).
In 1979 he took over the Green Lane Gallery giving aspiring artists an exhibition space at
The same time as running what was then the only licensed social venue in Derbyshire for
The minority LGBT community. This received homophobic opposition in the Derby Trader at the time.
He left the world a better place, and Derby a more tolerant one, on 4 April 2008 aged 80.
