Tell us about your business?
Design With Heart is an inclusive greeting card company. I founded this business on a simple but powerful premise: love is love. We offer a full line of greeting cards, art prints, LGBT wedding invitations and wrapping paper that celebrate love, Marriage Equality and LBGTQ lives.

I designed this line after my partner and i were married. We could not find an appropriate design for our wedding announcement. I didn’t want to feel retro-fitted into someone else’s life on such a special occasion. So I designed our announcement. After we were married, we got 6 of exactly the same congratulatory cards from our friends. I realized there is a huge void in the marketplace. As an entrepreneur and graphic designer, I saw an opportunity to create a smartly-designed collection that had a universal appeal.

What have been your greatest successes?
I launched this business in earlier this year. It has been a thrill to have our product line picked up by terrific museum stores, retailers and book shops across the country. We’ve even taken two international retail orders. We are constantly looking for new retailers and hoping to expand the line.

I’ve worked as a graphic designer and art director my entire career. Yet, this is the first product of my own that I have brought directly to market. It has been a great experience. I’m very proud of the messaging, design and quality of these products.

What has been your greatest challenge and how did you overcome it?
We’ve had a great launch. We’ve only faced a bit of opposition with some of our sales calls – a couple of nasty comments here and there. you know, you can’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Our greeting cards celebrate the universal idea that love is love. Like one of our favorite cards says, “Love is a terrible thing to hate.”

What advice would you give to other small businesses in appealing to the LGBT+ community?
Be Authentic. Be Unique. Be Kind. And try to remember, Love may very well be the answer!
