The classic movie star Marlene Dietrich will be remembered in an entertaining evening of music and film at Conway Hall, in Holborn on 7 September.

Marlene Dietrich – an affectionate tribute will be presented by Terry Sanderson and includes an exploration of this extraordinary woman’s life – from her start in Weimar Berlin to her fabulous Hollywood career (we’ll see some of her most memorable movie scenes) and on to her heroic wartime fight against the Nazis. For her efforts on the front line of World War II she received the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour that theUSA can bestow, as well as the Legion d’Honneur fromFrance.

Dietrich’s extraordinary wartime story will be graphically and movingly told with the use of rare archive film footage.

The show culminates with a showing – in its entirety – of her one-woman show. Filmed inSwedenin 1963, Dietrich puts on a dazzling performance accompanied by Burt Bacharach and his orchestra.

Author and journalist Terry Sanderson, who will recall the personal and professional life of this fascinating woman, said: “There are 200 books written about Marlene Dietrich, which gives some idea of the depth and breadth of the life she led. This show gives an impression of what she achieved in her long career and is packed with music, movies and heroism. Her influence continues to this day with fashion designers still referencing her unerring sense of style and popstars from Madonna to Lady Gaga trying to recreate the many images that Dietrich projected over the years.

“Those who saw her stage show will never forget it, and now this gives an opportunity to see this most glamorous of stars performing at the peak of her career. As Ernest Hemmingway said: ‘If she had only her voice, she could break your heart’ And this tribute will illustrate to you exactly what he meant”.

“To see Dietrich commanding the stage – and her audience – with such apparent ease – is an object lesson in theatre craft.”
