Forget Football and Tennis! Gay Sports Day Returns on 30 August

Never mind the World Cup and Wimbledon – get ready for the real sporting highlight of the year. The annual GMFA/Royal Vauxhall Tavern Gay Sports Day returns on Bank Holiday Monday, 30 August, when teams will battle for victory in events such as the drag relay, the handbag throw and the fabulous 50m mince. Registration is now open at www.gmfa.org.uk/sportsday, so you can sign your team up, get training and help raise vital money to benefit gay men and the local community.

The Vauxhall Sports Day is a gay institution dating back to the 80s. This is the fourth year that GMFA, the gay men’s health charity, and the Royal Vauxhall Tavern have joined forces to host the event.

Matthew Hodson, Head of Programmes at GMFA, commented: “Sports Day has become a fixture in the summer calendar and last year’s event drew our biggest crowd yet. The teams make a huge effort, with some amazing costumes and plenty of competitive spirit. This year promises to be even bigger and better, so expect more fun, frolics and frivolity, and plenty of surprises.”

The money raised will go towards helping GMFA carry out its vital work with gay men. The charity works with volunteers, most of whom are gay men, to tackle gay men’s health issues, including sexual health, general wellbeing, and self-esteem. Money will also go to two organisations that help look after the local Vauxhall community – Vauxhall City Farm, a working farm that volunteers transformed from a derelict piece of land back in the 70s, and The Friends of Spring Gardens, which helps maintain the land where Sports Day takes place.

There will once again be a trophy for the winning team and for the team that raises the most money. For the first time, to show appreciation for the amount of work teams put into their fancy dress, there will be a trophy for the team judged to be wearing the best costumes.

Matthew adds: “Sports Day is all about fun, celebration and giving back to the community. We’re expecting regular teams from previous years as well as plenty of new faces, all competing for glory. So whether you want to show off your sporting prowess or cheer from the sidelines, we hope to see you there.”

Places for teams are strictly limited, so entry is on a first-come, first-served basis. To make sure your team enters the event, please register as soon as possible at www.gmfa.org.uk/sportsday.

The event will start at 1pm in Spring Gardens, Vauxhall (behind the Royal Vauxhall Tavern).
