For most people who go on a Pride march, the walking part of the journey is just a couple of miles. For long time GMFA volunteer, Peter Shackleton, the Pride March will mark the beginning of a 300 mile journey from London to Land’s End in Cornwall, hoping to raise £5,000 in aid of the charity.
Peter will trek through rural parts of Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Somerset and Devon before following the south Cornish coastal path to Land’s End.
Mr Shackleton revealed why this walk is so important to him: “I joined GMFA in the mid 90s, after losing a couple of very close friends to HIV related illness. I felt so frustrated seeing good people die before their time. I knew I had to do something to fight the disease and to save others suffering the same fate.”
Matthew Hodson, Head of Programmes at GMFA, said: “We are hugely grateful to Peter for undertaking this epic journey to raise funds for us. Like many of us at GMFA, Peter got involved in HIV prevention because he saw at first hand the terrible impact that HIV can have on people’s lives. In the face of sweeping cuts to HIV prevention funding, Peter is doing his bit to ensure that people can be educated to prevent the transmission of HIV.”
My Shackleton adds: “I want to spread the word that we can all make a difference to the lives of others, as well as our own lives. That’s what GMFA’s ‘Count Me In’ campaign is about as well, doing your bit for the health of everyone. It just takes a little effort and hopefully, in this case, a little sponsorship. I’m looking forward to London Pride and getting sponsorship from everyone out there. My message to everyone is that we can all achieve much more than we think if we just put our minds to it – and in my case – one foot in front of the other.”
Peter will begin his odyssey on the London Pride March on 2 July, followed by a meet and greet session at the GMFA stand in Trafalgar Square. Peter will officially begin the walk on Sunday 3 Jul, leaving from the South Bank.
Peter will post live blogs everyday from the route which will be posted on GMFA’s Facebook page. This will enable the world to follow his progress and hear about the adventures he is having day to day.
