This Thursday 18 July Manchester’s famous Canal Street will play host to a celebration to mark the passing of The Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill.
Last night the Bill allowing same-sex couples to marry in England and Wales has passed its final hurdle in Parliament. The government legislation is now due to get royal assent, after which it is likely to become law later this week.
Paul Martin OBE, Chief Executive of The Lesbian & Gay Foundation comments “This is a historic day for all lesbian, gay and bisexual people across the country. It’s fantastic that same sex couples will now soon be able to equally celebrate their love for one another alongside heterosexual couples – this is a huge step forward for equality.”
The Manchester-based charity launched it’s Love Equal Marriage campaign in December 2013 and has been reaching out to people across Greater Manchester and beyond, asking them to take action by contacting their MP and lobbying for equality. A host of celebrities have supported the campaign including Great British Bake off Winner John Whaite, Emmerdale Actress Alicya Eyo and Charlie Condou from Coronation Street.
Paul Martin goes onto comment “All of us at The Lesbian & Gay Foundation want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank-you to all of our amazing supporters who ensured their voices were heard within this important campaign and its down to them that we are now within kissing distance of marriage equality.”
The charity are calling for supporters to join them for their celebrations this Thursday 18 July at Via on Canal Street, Manchester to help celebrate the passing of The Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill. There will be canapés, cake, cocktails and confetti! There is no need to RSVP just turn up, and The LGF are asking people to spread the word as everyone is welcome.
