Terrence Higgins Trust, the UK’s leading HIV charity, has joined together with SAIDSO, an HIV agency in Essex to establish Terrence Higgins Trust East. THT East is currently operating out of centres in Southend-on-Sea and Colchester.
Following successful merger negotiations, on 1st June, SAIDSO transferred all activities and existing staff to Terrence Higgins Trust. Terrence Higgins Trust East will be working closely with Essex County Council, Thurrock Borough Council, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and the South Essex Primary Care Trusts to provide HIV services in the county.
Keith Worthing, HIV/AIDS specialist social worker based in Basildon, said: “Joining smaller organisations together with Terrence Higgins Trust, the largest HIV charity in the UK, will bring real benefits to the 300 known people with HIV and AIDS and their families in Essex. We will be able to offer a more proactive and consistent service across Essex and encourage more people to seek help and information about HIV ”.
Donald Branch, Director of England and Wales services for Terrence Higgins Trust says: “We are delighted that Terrence Higgins Trust East will be developing new and expanded services for people with HIV in Essex. SAIDSO have been working with people living with and affected by HIV in Essex for the past 17 years and this merger will expand the reach of this vital work.”
