This Spring the London Fringe is playing host to a heart warming new play ‘PROUD’ from the pen of inspirational new writer John Stanley. The play is already being called a “Cockney, Oscar Wilde!”
The play is a Comedy/Drama concerning Lewis, a young gay man who attempts to marry life as a promising London 2012 Olympic Boxing medal hopeful with his older boyfriend’s Tom’s desire to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Admiral Duncan bombing in April 2009.
As a survivor of the explosion, Tom has always commemorated the bombing as a single man. But with Lewis in his life and with the tenth anniversary looming he hopes this year will be different. As with so many situations, what spawns the events of PROUD is one person’s inability to tell the truth and confront the consequences that the truth may have both for themselves and the ones that they love. In this case, eighteen year-old LEWIS’S understandable reluctance to come clean with his Boxing coach MAC about his homosexuality provides the catalyst for the deceptions, misunderstandings and conflicts that unfold throughout the play but this is no simple “coming out” story: this, if anything, is more a story of how wanting it all can often mean risking it all in the end.
PROUD is a deliberately unusual marriage of themes in that it takes the concept of aspiration to success that London 2012 has instilled in so many of our young athletes and combines it with the emotional disparity between a Soho Bomb survivor and his lover for whom the Soho Bomb can never be anything but history. That said? It is an incredibly funny and fast-moving piece that seems readily prepared to lurch off in a direction you may not have been expecting at any given moment.
PROUD premieres at the New Wimbledon Studio Theatre 8th – 11th April 2009 (Box Office 0870 060 6646) Tickets – £10.00 (£7.50 conc.)
