Stonewall’s sixth annual Brighton Equality Walk, supported by American Express, bucked the recession on Sunday May 3, drawing a record number of walkers and raising a record amount for the equality charity. Over 400 walkers joined hosts Brian Paddick and Mr Gay UK Dino Gamecho to raise over £50,000 on the 10K walk – £20,000 more than last year’s Brighton Equality Walk.

The Walk was opened by the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Councillor Garry Peltzer Dunn. Walkers made the most of the May Bank Holiday sunshine and followed a route set by the Brighton-based lesbian and gay sports group BLAGSS. Walkers followed the sea-front, through Brighton’s gay village and ended with a prize-giving ceremony for the top fundraisers.

‘Stonewall’s work can make an even greater difference to the lives of young lesbian, gay and bisexual people around the country, thanks to the success of this year’s Equality walk,’ said Laura Doughty, Stonewall’s Director of Fundraising. ‘Our pioneering Education for All campaign will receive a real boost from our supporters who took part on the day. This will help us towards our aim of producing and sending a DVD of FIT, our successful play for schools, to every secondary school in Britain so they have more confidence in tackling the homophobic bullying that Stonewall research has found to be rife.’
